Romantic Picnic Food Ideas
I’m going to give you my best romantic picnic food ideas here, but first, let me quickly tell you what I believe makes picnic food romantic. To me, it’s all about simple but delicious food that you can eat with your hands and feed each other without getting messy. Nothing too juicy, nothing that gets sticky, and nothing that stains easily!
You can use plates and cutlery if you want, of course. I just feel it’s more romantic if you can feed your lover with your hands. Like with a succulent peach or a cherry tomato. They are juicy enough to make it sensual, but not too juicy to make it messy!
Imagine a delicious, tasty peach, with just enough juice to make it dribble down you cheek as you take a bite. When you lower the fruit from your lips your lover sees it and smiles, then gently wipes it off your face with his loving fingers.
You take one more bite and it dribbles a little more. This time he comes very close, looks into your eyes, and then softly kisses your cheek very close to your lips, tasting the sweet juice on your skin, and then from your lips… Need I say more? : )
My Best Romantic Picnic Food Ideas
Good Succulent Fruits
Fruits can be very romantic. I love succulent fruits like peach, plums, mandarin, pears or watermelon. These are the ones that dribble when you take a bite. I also like any kind of fruit or berry that is bite sized. Like strawberries and grapes. They don’t make a mess, and are perfect for feeding each other.
For fruits that don’t come in bit sizes, simply cut them into smaller pieces. Like mangos or apples. Do this in advance though, not during the picnic. You can serve them with a little honey for an extra touch of sweetness.
Veggies with Dip
If you want a good tasting but healthy snack, raw veggies with a good dip is an excellent choice. I love carrot and celery sticks, and smaller pieces of broccoli.
Some great dip recipes:
Lemon Garlic Chick Pea Dip
Smokey Ranch Dip
If you like eggs and potatoes all I can say is Spanish tortilla! All you need to add are some nice red sherry tomatoes and you have the perfect meal. Easy to pack, easy to serve, and simply delicious!
The work here is in the preparation, in the actual making of the tortilla. It takes a while to make.
Here is a great recipe from Food Network.
If you want to fancy it up a little, you can add some slices of Serrano ham, Spanish Cheese, and some honey melon.
Cheese and Ham Buffet
This is one of my favorite romantic picnic food ideas! Bring some French baguettes, a good selection of chees, ham and olives. I love the delicious prosciutto or Parma ham... and maybe some honey mustard dressing, sundried tomatoes in oil, and some caper; anything that makes your mouth water! Serve it like a little buffet.
Bring something sweet for dessert. Sit close together and just look into each other’s eyes as you talk and eat for hours!
I simply have to give you Italian romantic picnic food ideas. Italian food is absolutely my favorite! For something easy, I just LOVE bruschetta. They are so simple, yet so delicious and tasty. Prepare the toast before you leave.

If you want to go Italian all the way, serve them with a nice Italian drink. It can be a good wine or my absolute favorite Italian drink, Martini Asti, served cold, of course! If you like to mix drinks, bring some ice and make
Bread & Cheese
If you love cheese, bring a collection of your favorite cheeses, a loaf of freshly baked bread that you can easily break with your hands. You can add some grapes for something sweet. For a little touch of gourmet, bring some succulent cherry tomatoes and some fresh peppery rocket salad and you have the perfect romantic picnic food!
Pick a nice wine. If you prefer something without alcohol, you can serve sparkling water with a twist of lemon.
Don’t forget to bring a good knife and a wooden tablet for the cheese. No need for plates.
honey mustard dressing,
olive oil, vinaigrette, balsamic vinegar…
Freshly Baked Croissants
The French have always been considered very romantic, so I should add an idea with a French feel to these romantic picnic food ideas. Don’t you think?
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of a French picnic is the baguettes. And I actually suggest that for the Cheese and Ham buffet. But the French also have something much better… Freshly baked croissants!
I simply love croissants. They are the best bakery goods on earth! And they are perfect as simple romantic picnic food. Tear off one piece at a time as you hand feed your lover with this delicious wonder!
If you have a good bakery in your neighborhood it’s an easy way to go. You can eat them simple, just as they come, or you can make them a little fancier with some good cheese and a little lettuce or tomatoes.
If you want something sweet, go for the chocolate filled one. They are fantastic! It’s a much better option than serving the simple ones with jam. Chocolate croissants are incredibly tasty, they are not sticky like jam can be, and the chocolate is usually dark, which we all know has an aphrodisiac effect which I am sure no one will mind on a romantic picnic!
It’s always nice with a little sweet. Besides the chocolate croissant, here are my favorite sweet romantic picnic food ideas:
Fresh fruits are great, but dried fruits, like dried apricots or pineapple, are also an excellent picnic food.
Good chocolate is always welcome in the world of romantic. Go for the dark one if you like it. It doesn’t melt as easily, and of course, you get the aphrodisiac as a bonus! I love chocolate covered nuts, especially macadamias. They can also be truffle filled chocolates, or the kind with liquor if you like them.
Another great option is to bring a dessert, but just for one. Like a mini cheese cake or pie. Serve it with two spoons and share it. Sharing a dessert is can be very romantic!
If you like to bake, bring some homemade cookies. Or, just buy them! You can decorate them with little heart shapes using melted chocolate. If they are dark cookies, use white chocolate. For red hearts you can add some red food coloring to the white chocolate, or to powdered sugar mixed with a few drops of water.
Ideas for Drinks
Before I say anything else, just one thing: Plastic cups are not romantic! They are practical, as they don’t break, but please… If you prefer plastic, get some nice disposable wine glasses. They will make a big difference!
For the drinks, pick something you both like, but be sure you will be able to serve it at an appropriate temperature! Champaign is very romantic, but it’s really not the same if it’s served warm. A romantic drink should taste good!
A good red wine could be easier. If you’re not a big fan of red wine, you can always use a wine cooler or even bring some ice in a small cooler. Wine, sparkling water, Champaign, or some Limoncello spritzers are all good options.
If you want something non-alcoholic, try some homemade lemonade, fruit juice with sparkling water, or simply some sparkling water with a few drops of lemon. To make it a little fancy, you can decorate the glasses with a lemon twist.
